Interviewing for software jobs? It's kind of like moving to a foreign country.

Most developers get caught up in the technical aspects of interviewing that they don't put in the time to practice communicating effectively.

Top 5 Overlooked Tips All Junior React Devs Should Know

Resume

Your hiring manager is really busy, so keep it short. Stick to bullet points and highlight job-relevant, big wins from your previous positions.

Additionally, use numbers as much as possible. This is a quick way for the hiring manager to see how awesome you are.

Interviewing

Practice. A lot. Interviewing is a skill that atrophes quickly.

Practice the basics like, \"tell me about a time you overengineered a solution\" or \"walk me through your process of fixing a bug.\"

It's not enough just to know code. You need to be a clear communicator.

The number 1 thing that stops us from communicating effectively? Fear. So practice enough to a point where you are confident in talking about yourself to strangers.

Remember, you're a good person, and you have a lot to offer. Keep your head up high and know that rejections are okay, and they do not reflect who you truly are.

Experience

In lieu of commercial experience, you want to offer experiences you've gained from completing real-world, functional projects.

It's not just enough to prove you know a language or framework. You'll be competing with lots of applicants who know that. What really counts is being able to work as a team and move the business forward.

Tech Challenges

Most developers, especially juniors, add unecessary complexity to software problems. When you're starting out, stick to 1 framework or language. Don't add too much right away. If you're building a side project, limit the scope so you can knock out a v1 in under 30 days.

If you use print / console.log statements everywhere, it's time to invest in a debugger. Take a day, learn the basics, and you will start solving bugs in a fraction of the time.

Online Presence

If I Google you, I should see your LinkedIn and Github. This makes it easy for me to quickly check that you're active in the community and that you code. It may be seen as a red flag if you're too anonymous, if you know what I mean.

As you may recall, I started building 12 products in 12 months. My first idea was a tool for small business owners so they could rapidly generate and test effective landing pages. And it was dead on arrival 😄

Sure, there was a little excitement. I got some \"Ohh! Brilliant idea!\"s.

In the past, that excitement may have lead me down a path doomed from the start. I probably would've mistaken compliments for genuine desire. I like to imagine Tony Soprano saying, \"Always the optimist, this guy over here.\"

One of the main takeaways from The Mom Test is to be on the lookout for compliments. Compliments are free, meaning it doesn't cost a whole lot to give them away. People have generally learned it's safer to give a compliment and move on, as opposed to expressing curiosity (or doubt).

But peoples' time, money, professional introductions—these things aren't free, and if someone is giving this to you, it's a probably a sign that they're invested. Or at least, they're more invested than someone who just says, \"Awesome! Now that's keepin' it 💯\"

Queue my next idea 🤓. The plan was to make a tool that helped course creators automatically sell their digital courses. Wild Ink Marketing sells courses and makes a few sales here and there, but wouldn't it be great if there was a tool that automatically advertised and sold courses for people?

Turns out, nope. Lol.

A helpful Internet stranger (the best kind of stranger, IMO), experienced in selling courses and manages a large Facebook group about the topic, simply stated, \"It's not a big deal for me\" 😐 Cool. cool.

Alright then. What's the next idea? In my last post, I shared an image of a helpful spreadsheet used for quickly evaluating ideas. Jon Yongfook, someone who inspired me to do 12 in 12, created this template to get me started.

A couple of ideas I had on that list were courses for software developers. For example, teaching React.js or generating revenue from a side project. The thing is, a few years ago, I stopped working full-time in software. I was getting burned out and felt like I needed to step away for a little bit. So I wasn't entirely motivated to make a software course as one of my first products.

Another part of the reason I considered not making a product in this space was my hunch that it was just too crowded.

As I see it, there are 3 proven ways to learn software development. 1) Traditional schooling. 2) Coding bootcamps. 3) Self-taught with free/inexpensive online resources.

After running a poll, it became rather clear that people from group #3 (self-taught programmers) needed help getting a foot in the door.

I messaged some of the people who replied to my poll with something like, \"Hi! What are you building for your side project?\" This lead to a lot of interesting 1-on-1 convos and it became quite apparent that most junior developers struggle when coming up with impressive project ideas for their portfolio.

This gave me an idea: I could run a mentorship program for junior developers, teaching them the ins and outs of interviewing in the industry.

All I'd have to do is share a link to the Facebook group and I'd get tons of signups. Easy, right? That night I sent what would be my last post in the group, because the next morning I woke up to this:

I was banned! I'm still not entirely sure why. Although this particular group doesn't, many Facebook groups have explicit rules banning self-promotion. I have a feeling the moderator of the group interpreted my post as a sales promo.

At first, I was pretty bummed, but this reminded me how important it is to build my own audience, as opposed to relying on others—especially if they can cut me off at any time.

Luckily, with the help of the friends I made in the web dev community (both on Facebook and other niche communities), I was able to get 300+ signups for the mentorship program.

so after I found a cup or group that was really starting to light up about the things I was talking about, I became very active on Facebook. This group was responding to everything I was saying it was getting a lot of reactions so I felt like I was really onto something. The benefit was that I was able to run many poles and get a lot of the back quickly this way and there's actually help me determine where I Shird position myself.

It's funny because a few years ago I had essentially a written off software altogether. I was really burned out and just felt like I needed to step away for a little bit. Part of the reason I never considered making a product in the space to have it was that I just felt it was too crowded I didn't know where I can provide unique value.

Funny enough just getting a few poles are there and talking to several people via direct message and a little Facebook hack I found, I was able to very rapidly figure out where I can provide value\\

in a way that the market was extremely underserved.

See there are many products on the market that will teach people how to code but what happens to a lot of soft top programmers is that a lot of them struggle to Break into the market and land a job.

So I may ask I decided I would take the information I've learned and turn it into a horse.

I started promoting in groups and just talking to people via DM's and that's why am.

I had my first major setback.

I woke up grab my phone and was surprised that I did not have any notifications from my group. I tried searching for it absentmindedly click the first result and realized I was on the wrong page. Then it hit me I must've been banned.The group I relied on so I have a lease for my feedback banned me.

I never received a direct feedback as to why I was banned words but I know it must've been because of promoting.

It was a real sad back at first but I knew I had to MoveOn start building my own audience and this was just for the proof of it.

Admittedly I did start promoting this a little aggressive Lee to the point where I started receiving hundreds of messages hundreds of bought request friend request in over 1000 friend requests.

Many of these were spam scammers are bats but at first I knew that several religious so I just decided to except all of them.

That was a huge mistake because over the next five days I received thousands of scam solicitations.

But like I said many were legit and many were really friendly and talk to me about my chorus and even pointed out errors and typos that I had I am placed her on Facebook look at my profile page and a typo and our website.

So far I've received it 40 applications for my chorus unfortunately some most I'm not qualified but some are perfect and I know Will be able to make a difference together and I know that it's just a matter of finding the other right people. In my course of promotional I came across an extremely active reacts group I have a call with one of the moderators and he is helping me promote it next week we'll see where that goes

On the day of my parents’ moving party, I committed to building 12 products in 12 months.

They just sold my childhood home (without even asking if I wanted it. kidding, of course… 😭), and almost the entire extended family was there to help unload the uhaul to the new house.

I’d heard about 12 x 12 on IndieHackers, a podcast for tech entrepreneurs. 12 x 12 is relatively new, and some pioneers behind the challenge were being interviewed. Basically, for a whole year, you try to build 1 product a month until something takes off.

After unloading the millionth box from the moving truck, I told my cousin my plan to try the 12 x 12 challenge starting June 2022. I didn't want to tell anyone else and get myself psyched out.

I needed a shake up. I knew throwing myself into something I had always wanted to (but was maybe too afraid to) was probably a good call.

One person with a lot of success from this is Jon Yongfook from Bannerbear, an API for advertisers. Another is Peter Levels from Nomad List, a remote job listing website. They both provided some type of starting point, with Yongfook providing a helpful spreadsheet with criteria for quickly evaluating an idea.

Until lately, I’ve never ever considered myself an ideas person. I think this feeling is common in software developers. I see it a lot with students in my junior developer mentorship program. But I mean, how hard can it be to create a great app, really? Tap on your keyboard a little *bleep bloop* and presto, you've got the next Facebook!

My first product idea was a tool for small business owners to rapidly generate and test effective landing pages.

Over the years, I've built lots of apps. Experience has taught me just how big of a mistake it is to commit to any one idea without validating it first. So, I used May to get clarity before committing to any single product.

Look, I've probably heard 1,000 times by now how important it is to validate an idea. The thing is, I think, software developers just really blow at customer development.

Even though I knew not to commit to anything yet, I still made a critical mistake. And that was how I went about validating it.

All around the Internet, I posted my idea in groups specifically for entrepreneurs and SaaS owners (software as a service). Solopreneurs were really excited about the idea. But the others? Yeah, not so much. That left a bad taste in my mouth, because with the results now in hand, I realized I could not offer a lot of value to solopreneurs—I just don't know enough about their world.

That's when a kind stranger DM’d me that I was effectively running a biased survey.

Let's just say it was a little frustrating. I’d put in the work up front to make sure that didn’t happen and failed. They suggested I read Rob Fitzpatrick’s The Mom Test, a book that I've probably heard of 1 million times.

$\"Best$ It's easy to make book recommendations. It's not as easy putting into practice the advice you get from a book.

But The Mom Test was 100% actionable. Why? Because it was made for dorks like me who think in terms of solving problems with data, as opposed to those ideas guys who naturally resonate with the customer (ew people, gross). I wish I read it 10 years ago.

It was exactly what I needed. It turned everything around.

In fact, I even started using it in my current business. In the last 2 weeks, I’ve probably talked to more customers than I ever have in the last year.

Between that book and some other life changes I made, I gained the confidence to just get out there with a try-and-see attitude.

After just a couple days of employing The Mom Test, it was pretty clear where I was making the most headway.

One of my ideas was a course for software developers. Of the 5 or 6 different communities I reached out to online, this group was, by far, the most excited.

Over a couple weeks, I was able to connect with dozens of devs from around the world. That gave me the evidence and the confidence to pursue the course idea further.

In just a few days, I had close to 200 applications for my course.

Awesome! All that's left now is to put together a curriculum… easy, right? Right??

Here's the thing about educating software developers: it's a very saturated market. I'm competing with universities, bootcamps, other online courses—how can I stand out?

I hate writing. It's never come easy to me.

Some people can do [xy]. not me, i try to do [x] and it might as well be [z].

A few years ago, I was living in SF. it was a magical place in a magical time. Pre-covid, an escape from trump, and the fires weren't too bad.

I had just spent $5k to realize i didn't want to work full-time as a software engineer. i will talk about this another time.

I decided to try out this course thing, and it got 20 signups. My girlfriend / partner / did the same thing and got 200 signupgs. So we realized she was on to something. She had just started dabblign in author marketing.

Cut to today, and we've made 3 courses, sold to thousands of clients, started 2 new lines of business.

After working with others on products my career, this seemed to make sense for me to timing wise to build (and launchh) a product for myself. I've built several projects over time just like any other hacker but like most, they never got traction or worse, never got launched.

Working with wild ink has taught me so much about that I was, perhaps ignorate to, coming from a world of big scope, teams, enterprise, scalability, etc.

So i'm going to start with 1) a copy writer generator. Why? Because man I hate writing.
